Borna Coric v Mackenzie McDonald Head to Head

Borna Coric has a losing record against Mackenzie McDonald. The Croat lost in their only meeting at the 2021 Australian Open in four sets.

Coric Returns to ‘s-Hertogenbosch

Borna Coric has played at the Rosmalen Championships once before this, making his debut in 2019 and reaching the semifinal of the tournament. He had an unsuccessful title defense in Halle a week later, retiring from his quarterfinal due to an abdominal injury.

Sadly for Coric, the injury was more serious than at first glance and was forced to miss Wimbledon that year.

Since then, Coric has not been able to return to grass courts. 2020 Covid happened, and in 2021 his shoulder was not quite in good shape and he only played nine matches during the season.

Last year, the grass swing just didn’t fit into Coric’s plans as he had only embarked on his comeback from surgery.

He did put together a fine second half of the campaign that saw him capture a maiden Masters title in Cincinnati and re-entered the world’s top 30 straightaway from outside the world’s top 100.

Coric didn’t have a great start to the year by his high standards, making one quarterfinal in the first four months.

But since switching to clay, he enjoyed a mini resurgence of some sort, finishing this year’s clay-court swing with a respectable 9-5 record. Let’s see if he’ll get his first win on grass since 2019.

McDonald Stuns Ivashka In Straight Sets

One of the most surprising results on Tuesday was certainly Mackenzie McDonald’s 6-4 6-3 win over Ilya Ivashka.

It took the American just 82 minutes to polish up a victory against an opponent who was clearly not feeling his game click into gear.

Both players took a while to get some sort of rhythm into their games. McDonald fend off three break points to start the match, but the two players quickly exchanged breaks. Normaly ensued for most of the remaining part of the first set until in the 10th game where McDonald fashioned two set points and converted on his second attempt.

In the second set, McDonald played clutch tennis, saving all three break points on his serve and taking his on Ivashka’s which proved sufficient in getting a gutsy win.

The only time McDonald made it to the last eight in a tour-level grass court tournament it was in Den Bosch. Could lightning strike twice?

Coric v McDonald Prediction and Tip

Coric hasn’t played on grass since 2019 which is hardly ideal for him. The Croat, however, is adaptable and is an all-round surface athlete. He’s got a bigger serve than McDonald and that is a major plus on the lawns. Expecting a hard-fought victory for the third seed.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 4/9
  • Low Risk Tip: Coric to win: 8/13
