Humbert Tames Big-Serving Kubler

On paper, Ugo Humbert’s first-round opponent Jason Kubler was hardly from a stroll in the park. Kubler, with his massive serve and heavy forehand, was always going to be a threat on fast courts.

Humbert took an hour and 23 minutes to come away with a commanding 6-4 6-2 win to start his grass-court campaign with a bang.

The first set was extremely tight as neither player wanted to cede momentum on serve. There were only two break points in it, and both were on Kubler’s serve.

Humbert converted in the fifth game of the set to take the lead. And the Frenchman had a look at his second break point at 5-3, which was a set point, but Kubler quickly wiped it off. A game later, Humbert held to wrap up the set.

Kubler couldn’t keep up with the Frenchman’s pace and use of sharp angles. He was broken twice in a one-sided second set. Overall, Humbert tallied 11 aces and saved the lone break point he faced in the match.

Ruusuvuori Edges Nakashima

Emil Ruusuvori had a tough time than Humbert and required three sets to see off Brandon Nakashima.

The American had reached the second week of last year’s Wimbledon, so with such a decent result on his resume, he was bound to be the outright favorite in this matchup.

But Ruusuvuori was his match in almost every department. Add to the fact that Finn reached the Queen’s quarterfinals last season, then Nakashima was going to have his hands full.

The first set was played at a breakneck pace with Ruusuvuori using his ground stroke power to win the bigger points, taking his one break point, and edging Nakashima in a tight opener 6-3.

In the second set, Ruusuvuori dropped his guard. Errors started to creep into his game. He served three double faults and won 30% of second-serve points. This time it was Nakashima’s turn to win the critical points in the match and he converted one of his two break points to win the second set 6-3.

Ruusuvuori quickly regained his composure and precision on serve in the third set. He tallied eight aces to Nakashima’s none, and his second-serve points won rose from 30% to 56%. The Finn also saved all four break points he faced in the set and broke Nakashima towards the end to clinch the set 6-3.

Humbert v Ruusuvuori Prediction and Tip

Ruusuvuori has a mental edge in this matchup having beaten Humbert three times without reply. But considering that these two have never played any dull affairs, we reckon Wednesday’s match will be another tightly-contested meeting.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 23.5 games in the match: 1/1
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Ruusuvuori to win: 11/10
