Sakkari Overcomes Wang

World no. 8 Maria Sakkari ousted China’s Xiyu Wang in straight sets in the first round of the Nottingham Open.

The Greek, who was ousted by Karoline Muchova in the first round of the French Open, needed an hour and 42 minutes to beat the world no. 75, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).

The top seed dominated the first set, but was given a tough fight in the second.

Wang broke in the very first game of the second set. However, Sakkari got the break back in the fourth game. She missed out on a match point in the 10th game on Wang’s serve and then failed to convert three more match points in the 12th game.

Sakkari then saved a set point in the second set tiebreak, before converting her fifth match point of the match to move to the round of 16.

Sakkari will be aiming to reach her fourth quarterfinal in Nottingham. She made it to the last eight in all three of her previous appearances in the tournament. But could not reach the semis even once. However, she is the top seed this year and there are huge expectations from her to make a deep run this year.

Sakkari improved her season record to 21-11 following the first round win. She has featured in four semifinals this year and will be hoping to go deep in Nottingham.
