Vekic Eliminates Bucșa

World no. 20 Donna Vekic eliminated Cristina Bucșa in a three-set first round contest on Monday.

The fourth seed Croatian won the first set in just 30 minutes, but then lost a tightly contested second set despite going up a break twice.

Vekic regrouped in the third set and raced to victory in no time, breaking her opponent three times in the set.

A winner in Nottingham in 2017, a finalist in 2019 and a semifinalist in 2018, Vekic has a solid record in the grass court tournament. On Wednesday, she will be aiming to reach the quarterfinals for the fourth time in Nottingham.

She has been in fine form this year, winning the title in Monterrey and making a second Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance in Melbourne.

Three of Vekic’s 11 career finals have been on grass and one of her four titles have come on the surface.

Golubic Dumps Out Teichmann

Viktorija Golubic was a semifinalist in Nottingham last year, and has got off to a good start this year as well, defeating compatriot Jil Teichmann 6-4, 6-3 in the opening round.

Golubic, ranked no. 150 in the world, converted 4 of 6 break points and saved 1 of 3 to oust the world no. 123 in an hour and 20 minutes.

With the win, Golubic has improved to 10-11 across levels this season. This was just her second win at the tour level in 2023, following her first round success in Miami.

A quarterfinalist in Wimbledon in 2021, Golubic has been a consistent performer on grass over her career. She also made it to the quarterfinal at the ITF Surbiton this year and is aiming for a second straight quarterfinal appearance in Nottingham.

Vekic v Golubic Prediction and Tip

Both are fantastic grass court players and have got off to a great start, but Vekic has produced some excellent results at the top level this year and therefore she goes into the match as a favourite. Also, Golubic has only played against low ranked players in lower level tournaments, so it will be a huge challenge for her against the Croatian.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Vekic to win: 1/3
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 21.5 games in the match: 4/5
