World no. 38 Tallon Griekspoor knocked out Mikael Ymer in three sets to move into the round of 16 in ‘s-Hertogenbosch for the second straight year.

Last year, the Dutch player had lost in the second round, but this year he will be looking to make a maiden quarterfinal at the Rosmalen Open.

Broken once in the match, Griekspoor converted 3 of 10 break points to oust the world no. 62, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in an hour and 49 minutes. One of the highlights of Griekspoor’s performance was that he won 43% return points (42 of 98).

Thank to the win, the Dutchman is 17-10 for the season, which began with him winning his maiden title at the Maharashtra Open.

He was also a semifinalist in Rotterdam but had an ordinary run on clay, winning just three of his eight matches on the surface. Looking for a change of fortune on grass, he has started off well and will now be hoping to reach a fourth quarterfinal of the season on Wednesday.

Popyrin Holds Off Rinderknech

World no. 90 Alexei Popyrin held off a strong second set challenge from Arthur Rinderknech in the first round on Tuesday.

The Australian, who had lost in the first round in Surbiton last week, needed an hour and 25 minutes to beat the French wild card 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).

Popyrin didn’t allow Rinderknech to break in the match as he saved the only break point that he faced. In contrast, he broke the world no. 85 once in the first set which helped him take a one-set-to-love lead.

In the second set, neither player could get a break, and Popyrin sealed the set and the match in the second set tiebreak.

The win improved the 23-year-old Australian’s season record to 13-12 overall at the tour level. He was a quarterfinalist in Adelaide and will be looking to reach the last eight for a second time at the tour level this season.
