It’s been a while since Fritz played in the Stuttgart Open having featured in the three editions between 2016 and 2018. And in those three seasons, his best result was a second round appearance in 2016.
A lot has changed obviously since then with Fritz having made it into the top 10 of the ATP Rankings and is a vastly improved player on grass too.
Like last season, Fritz won a title on grass in Eastbourne before driving home the momentum at Wimbledon where he made the quarterfinal. It took Rafael Nadal five sets to take him out there.
Fritz now returns to Stuttgart as he hopes to improve upon his Grand Slam showing for the season – he had bowed out in the second round at the Australian Open and the third round at the French Open.

Karatsev Scrapes Past Moutet
Having made the semifinal at the Madrid Masters and then needing to come through the qualifiers to enter round two at the French Open, Karatsev also made it to the top 50 of the ATP Rankings after having had a couple of rather woeful tennis seasons.
Which is why it was no surprise he came into this first round match here against Corentin Moutet as a 7/10 favourite.
In the end, Karatsev did win it but not before he had been given a scare. The three-set contest lasted three hours and 12 minutes and saw Karatsev fritter away a 3-1 lead in the second set to finally clinch his second round spot in three.
He won 7-6 (0), 6-7 (8), 7-5 with a break in the last game of the match being the only one for the third set.
Karatsev will need to up his game a lot more when he faces Fritz now but he does have a good serving weapon for grass which should make things interesting here.

While Fritz start off a 2/9 favourite here, Karatsev has the game to trouble the American. We could see him push this match into a third.
