Nick Kyrgios is a Wimbledon finalist from the previous season but was playing his first match of the year when he too to court for his opener here against Yibing. And it was evident to see from the very beginning he wasn’t at his best by any stretch.
The good news for Yibing is he was able to take advantage of that as he carved out a straight-set win over the Aussie, defeating him 7-5, 6-3 in 70 minutes to make it to the second round.
In what was his maiden match on grass, Yibing had started off a 12/5 underdog but after having saved a break-point in the first game of the opening set and another one in the 11th game, the Chinese player was never in trouble again.
He broke Kyrgios in the 12th game to seal the set and then put the Aussie under pressure as he served at 3-4 in the second set.
Having overcome Kyrgios’ serve to love, Yibing then served it out to love too to seal his second round berth.

Fucsovics Sends Shapovalov Out
There wasn’t a lot to choose between Fucsovics and his first round opponent, Denis Shapovalov and it turned out to be a stiff encounter alright.
In the end, Fucsovics needed three sets and two hours but he managed to come through and seal his second round spot next to Yibing.
Shapovalov drew first blood when he broke Fucsovics in the fourth game of the opening set but the former world number 31 from Hungary retaliated with a break in the sixth game of the second set.
With the momentum firmly with him, Fucsovics then got the better of his opponent’s serve on two occasions in the third set. He had three match-points in the eighth game there which he squandered but soon served it out to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to follow up his successive qualifier wins.

Rather interestingly, Yibing is 21/10 to win this and given his propensity to do well on quicker courts, it might not be such a bad call to back him against a player who is ranked 86th in the world.
