Cornet Takes down Mandlik in Three

Alize Cornet edged out the United States’ Elizabeth Mandlik in a three-set quarterfinal on Friday to reach her maiden semifinal of the season.

The Frenchwoman, who had struggled to win consecutive tour level matches this season, has won three in three in Nottingham and is one away from reaching a 16th WTA final.

The six-time tour level champion had begun her Nottingham campaign with a come-from-behind win over Katie Swan, beating the Briton 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the first round.

Cornet then handed the top seed Maria Sakkari a 6-1, 6-4 drubbing in the second round.

On Friday, the former world no. 11 had a tough outing against Mandlik but she still found a way to keep her chances alive in the tournament.

Cornet converted 6 of 9 break points and saved 4 of 8 to beat the world no. 110, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
