Sabalenka Returns to Grass

Sabalenka wasn’t allowed to take part in Wimbledon last season but that hadn’t stopped her featuring in the Rosmalen Open in 2022 where she reached the final.

She went on to lose to Ekaterina Alexandrova in that title-decider and was then bounced out in the very first round of this tournament in Berlin by Veronika Kudermetova.

This year with Wimbledon having changed their stance in allowing Sabalenka and co. to take part in their competition, she did not play at Rosmalen last week. Instead she will start off her grass swing with this opener at Berlin.

With the likelihood that Sabalenka won’t be playing any tournaments next week either in the lead-up to the season’s next Grand Slam, this becomes an important tune-up tournament for her. Can she get herself a few good results that take her deep into the competition?

Zvonareva Wins First Two Matches of the Season

It took her the qualifiers of this tournament to do that but Zvonareva has finally won a match for the season.

The 38-year-old, who barely plays in a lot of tournaments these days, has fallen to outside the top 1200 of the rankings and was coming into this competition on the back of five successive defeats for the season.

That included three losses in the qualifiers of events and two others in opening rounds of tournaments where she had a wildcard.

Such has been her lack of rhythm that she was a 11/10 underdog against Nigina Abduraimova in her opening qualifier here and then 17/10 odds to defeat Eugenie Bouchard in the second.

Zvonareva won them both in three sets to seal her main round berth here. Overcoming Sabalenka might not be that easy though.

Sabalenka v Zvonareva Prediction and Tip

Sabalenka can be expected to steamroll her opponent in this one, in straight sets and for the loss of minimal games.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Under 17.5 games in the match: 4/6
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Games Handicap Sabalena -7.5: 11/10
