Andrey Rublev v Yannick Hanfmann Head to Head

Rublev Stretched by Yibing

Playing in his first match of the season on grass, Rublev’s rustiness was evidenced in the manner in which he struggled to get past Wu Yibing. In the end, it was his experience that came through and so did the Russian but it took him three sets to make it through.

Rublev, who had been dumped out of the French Open in the third round, registered a less than convincing 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-2 win over his Chinese opponent to register his first victory on grass since 2021.

A finalist in this very tournament in 2021, Rublev was on court for two hours and 14 minutes and was broken twice before finally finding his rhythm in the final set.

Slamming 13 aces in the match, Rublev also won 80% of his first serve points but where he found the going slightly more difficult is his second serve. He lost 24 of the 47 points on it.

Against Hanfmann, Rublev should have slightly more confidence given his opponent’s usual issues outside of clay.

Hanfmann Struggles against Qualifier Wessels

Hanfmann’s record on grass before coming into this tournament was indicative of what could follow even if he was up against a qualifier in Louis Wessels.

The German had a career total of two wins on this surface and while he made this his third victory, it wasn’t before his 347th-ranked opponent had managed to take a set off him.

In a match lasting two hours and five minutes, Hanfmann came back from the loss of the second set to win win 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to enter round two of this competition for the first time in his career. This follows a second round appearance at the French Open where Hanfmann had entered as a lucky loser and a quarterfinal in Rome.

There wasn’t much to choose between the two players in this one what with just one break of serve separating the two players in each of the three sets. At 2-2 in the final set, it could have gone either way but Hanfmann held on to his serve in the next game and broke Wessels in the sixth to go on to claim a second round berth.

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Rublev to win in straight sets: 5/6
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 22.5 games in the match: 5/6
