Potapova Rebounds to Beat Kostyuk

Fourth seed Anasatsia Potapova bounced back after dropping the first set to beat Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in a three-set opening round contest.

Potapova missed out on two set points in the first set tiebreak, while Kostyuk capitalised on her first opportunity to take the opening set.

In the second set, Potapova got the only break of the set in the 11th game and then saved a break point in the next game to close out the set and force the decider.

The final set saw the Russian break in the seventh game and then she saved a break point in the 10th game before converting a fourth match point in the same game to end the Ukrainian’s resistance and register a 6-7 (6-8), 7-5, 6-4 victory in two hours and 34 minutes.

Potapova, who was a quarterfinalist in Birmingham two years ago, now has an opportunity to reach a second quarterfinal this year. Although, the 22-year-old world no. 21 does not have a lost of experience on grass, she has been in excellent form this year and has been a consistent performer.

Potapova also won her second WTA title this year, winning the crown in Linz. She is 23-12 overall this season and will look to add another win on Thursday.
