Cirstea Edges Past Bogdan

Last year’s semifinalist Sorana Cirstea got her 2023 Birmingham campaign off to a good start as the Romanian knocked out compatriot Ana Bogdan in three sets on Wednesday.

Cirstea, who had come into the tournament on the back of consecutive first round defeats in Strasbourg and the French Open, ended a three-match losing streak with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 victory.

The eighth seed Romanian, who won 73% points on her first serve, saved 6 of 10 break points and converted four of eight to beat the qualifier.

The 33-year-old will be aiming to reach her third quarterfinal in Birmingham. She has been in decent form this year, with her best coming in Miami, where she was a semifinalist. She also made it to the last eight in Indian Wells and won her maiden WTA 125 title by beating Elizabeth Mandlik in Reus.

Having registered her first win on grass this year, can Cirstea build on the start with another win on Thursday?

Frech Overcomes Slow Start to Beat Strýcová

Qualifier Magdalena Frech carried her winning momentum into the main draw as she began her campaign with a straight sets win over Barbora Strýcová.

It was a tough start for Frech, who had to save six set points in the 10th game to stay alive in the set and then she converted the only set point that she held in the tiebreak to take a one-set-to-love lead.

The second set turned out to be a one-sided affair with Frech racing to a 5-0 lead. The Czech did hold one serve but the Polish player closed out the match in the next game for a 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 victory.

Frech had made it to the main draw with back-to-back three-set wins over Amelia Rajecki and Jil Teichmann respectively in the qualifying rounds.

A quarterfinalist in Nottingham last week, Frech improved to 5-1 on grass, including the qualifying round wins in Birmingham.

Frech is 22-17 across levels in 2023. She will be hoping to reach her second tour level quarterfinal on Thursday.
