Vondrousova Sends Andreescu Packing

Marketa Vondrousova has been in decent form throughout the season and she carried that form to grass as she began her Berlin campaign with a straight sets win over Bianca Andreescu.

The 23-year-old Czech blanked the world no. 35 in the first set tiebreak to take a one-set-to-love lead. She then fell 1-4 behind in the second set after being broken twice by the Canadian, but Vondrousova clawed her way back into the set by winning four games in a row, but she squandered three match points on Andreescu’s serve at 4-5. However, she broke the Canadian for the third time in the set in the 12th game to win the match 7-6 (7-0), 7-5.

Vondrousova, who was a semifinalist in Linz and a quarterfinalist in Adelaide, will be looking to reach her third quarterfinal of the season.

Some of her other notable performances included round of 16 appearances in Indian Wells, Miami and Rome.

However, Vondrousova doesn’t have a great record on grass, and Wednesday’s win was only her third tour-level win on the surface.

Niemeier Stuns Jabeur

German qualifier Jule Niemeier stunned defending champion Ons Jabeur in the first round in Berlin on Tuesday.

The world no. 120 saved two set points at 4-5 in the first set and came back from a break down twice in the opening set before sealing it in the tiebreak.

The German then broke the Tunisian in the very first game of the second set and protected the lead till the end of the set for a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 victory over the world no. 6.

This was a third top 10 win for Niemeier, who had made it to the main draw with qualifying round wins over Noma Akugue Noha and Greet Minnen respectively. Both those wins came in three sets.

Niemeier tends to do well on grass and was a quarterfinalist at Wimbledon last year.

She didn’t get off to a good start this year though, losing all eight of her hard court matches. Tuesday’s win improved her season record to 10-17 across levels. Can she beat another player ranked higher than her on Thursday.

Vondrousova v Niemeier Prediction and Tip

Vondrousova is the superior player, she has also been in much better form than the German this year. However, Niemeier will be high on confidence after the win over the Tunisian and she also has a better record on grass. So this is expected to be a close match, with Vondrousova edging through.

Tips:
