Swiatek Is 35-6 in 2023

French Open champion Iga Swiatek kicks off her Wimbledon preparations in Bad Homburg. The World no. 1 has dominated the sport for the last 18 months, ruling on clay and hard courts, but when it comes to grass courts, the 22-year-old is yet to find her feet.

The Polish player has tour-level career record of 6-5 on grass, with her best being a round fo 16 appearance at Wimbledon in 2021.

Last year, Swiatek was beaten in the third round of the grass court major, having not played any of the warm up tournaments leading up to the Slam.

This year she takes part in the Bad Homburg Open, where she brings a 35-6 season record into the tournament.

An 18-time tour level champion, Swiatek has already featured in five finals this year, winning the titles in Doha, Stuttgart and the French Open, while finishing runner-up in Dubai and Madrid.

Having not even made it to the quarterfinals in her three Wimbledon appearance, Swiatek will be focused on preparing well for the event in Bad Homburg, so she could head to SW19 with a lot of confidence behind her.

Maria In Good Form

As we were writing the preview, Germany’s Tatjana Maria was preparing to play her semifinal at the WTA 125 in GAIBA, Italy.

The top seed in the WTA 125 event, Maria had beaten Ylena In-Albon, Lisa Pigato and Yanina Wickmayer en route the semifinal, where she is slated to meet Olga Danilović on Saturday.

The 35-year-old, who reached the semifinals of Wimbledon last year, has featured in three grass court tournaments so far this year. She was a quarterfinalist at the ITF Surbiton, made it to the second round in Nottingham and has reached the semifinals in GAIBA.

Overall, Maria is 32-18 across levels in 2023. She defended her Bogota title earlier this year to capture her third WTA career title. In addition she also picked up her 17th ITF title in Pune, India in January.

The world no. 66 Maria has been a decent grass court player throughout her career. This will be her second appearance in Bad Homburg, where she lost in the round of 16 last year. She brings good form into the tournament. Can she upset the top seed in the first match?

Swiatek v Maria Prediction and Tip

Without any doubts Swiatek is a far superior player than Maria but given how little she has played on grass, the gap between her and the German may not be too wide. Maria also has played plenty of matches on the surface this year, while Swiatek will need to adjust her game to grass as she plays her first match since winning the French Open a fortnight back.

So it will be a tricky opening round matchup for Swiatek, but she is expected to eventually edge past the German.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Swiatek to win: 4/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
