Safiullin Still Hunting for Maiden Win on Grass

In what is his third season of playing on grass, Safiulllin has never won a main draw match on this surface.

However, the Russian player has shown some sort of improvement for sure this season, having shrugged off the qualifying defeat at the Stuttgart Open to make the main draw at the following two competitions.

Wins over Benjamin Bonzi and Aslan Karatsev at Halle were both against the run of play and helped him enter the first round there. He then lost to Jan-Lennard Struff in that opener there.

This was followed by a couple of qualifying victories here in Mallorca. This time around they came against players ranked way lower than him but for Safiullin to still win them and make the main draw would have been a bit of a relief.

He defeated Alejandro Moro Canas and James McCabe to push closer to what could be his first ever win on grass in a main draw match. He has a player ranked nearly 150 places behind him up next.

Shelbayh Shocks Rinderknech

It took Shelbayh a couple of qualifier wins as well to come through but in sharp contrast to Safiullin’s performances, he managed to do that by overcoming a player who was 2/5 odds to win that match.

Taking on Arthur Rinderknech in the second qualifier of this tournament, Shelbayh overcame a first set deficit to take down his opponent in a third set tie-breaker.

This, from a player who had lost in the qualifiers at both, the Surbiton Challenger and Nottingham Challenger in the weeks preceding this competition. Not to mention the fact that Shelbayh had never played in any competitive grass court competition before this season.

The ante will now be raced as he faces a player who, despite being ranked 94th, has shown he is far better than some of the others that Shelbayh has played against. Can the Jordanian player raise his game here?
