The pair have played each other before, in New York three years ago, Fernandez winning in straight sets.

Fernandez Dominates German Substitute

If Emma Radecanu has begun to regret ever winning the US Open in 2021, Fernandez may be having similar doubts about meeting her in the final back then, as she has scarcely been the same player since, and is struggling to hold on to her top 100 status.

Still, she is only 20, and time is very much on her side if she wants to revive her career, and a  good run at Wimbledon next week would do wonders for her confidence.

However, she cannot hope for an easier match at the All-England club than she enjoyed in Bad Homburg against the German Lena Papadakis, ranked 332 in the world, a late substitute for the American Alycia Parks.

Fernandez dominated from the start, and took the first set without conceding a single game.

She then won the next five games of the second set, before Papadakis finally bothered the scorers.

Fernandez served out next game, the whole match over in less than an hour.

Blinkova Avoids Upset

Blinkova also had German opposition in the first round in the form of Sabine Lisicki, ranked 371st in the world, but she made considerably heavier weather of it.

In fact, it was Lisicki who drew first blood with an early break, and, although Blinkova later recovered it, she dropped her serve again and the German went on to the first set.

Fearing that she might be on the wrong end of an upset, Blinkova upped her game in the second set, went two breaks up, and consolidated her position to level the match.

Lisicki though, was not finished yet, and found herself a break to the good in the third set. That forced Blinkova to respond yet again, which she did by breaking back, and then once more, finally giving her the chance to serve out.

It was hardly the most convincing victory of her career.

Fernandez v Blinkova Prediction and Tip

Blinkova will consider herself favourite for this match, but she will have to play considerably better than she did in her first round victory against German opposition.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Blinkova to win: 8/11
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 22.5 games in the match: 5/4
