Samsonova Makes Serene Progress

Liudmila Samsonova won her opening match in Bad Homburg over the World No. 99 Viktoriya Tomova 6-1 6-4 in an hour and 17 minutes.

Samsonova, seeded second, is seen as the major challenger for Iga Swiatek, the tournament’s top seed at this week’s Bad Homburg Open.

And after dropping her last two matches, each in straight sets (retired against Sasnovich), Samsonova has made a full recovery from her recent thigh injury she picked up in Den Bosch.

The Russian, a winner on the lawns in Berlin two years ago, made short work of Tomova in a one-sided first set. Samsonova broke twice, dropped just three points behind her first serve, and saved two break points she faced on her own serve.

But the second set was a little bit more competitive as Tomova began to out-rally the Russian and rushed her into multiple errors. But Sasmonova’s serve wasn’t showing any profligacy as she hammered down five aces and won 13 of 16 first-serve points.

She converted one of her three break points midway through the set and did not lead her healthy lead slip away.

Noskova Picks Up Maiden Win on Grass

Linda Noskova scored her first WTA win on grass on Monday in Bad Homburg, defeating Ukranian qualifier Kateryna Baindl 6-2 7-5 in an hour and 21 minutes.

Noskova had last week taken a set from Jelena Ostapenko, the eventual champion in Birmingham. And she was buoyed by her performance.

Just 29 minutes is all she needed to wrap up the first set, breaking Baindl twice and keeping her serve functioning at an elite level – winning 14 of 17 first-serve points.

The second set, Baindl put up a fight as Noskova’s serving numbers dipped marginally. The two players exchanged breaks to open the second set, and they did so again in the middle of the set.

Baindl showed some resilience in the tenth game, saving five match points. It looked like she might have pulled through and force a decider.

But in the 12th game, Noskova finally took her chance, seizing it on her seventh match point.

Samsonova v Noskova Prediction and Tip

Noskova brings a lot of energy and a sharp tennis mind. But Samsonova’s attacking threat and experience on grass cannot be overlooked.
