Andreescu Scrapes Past Kartal

It wasn’t the most straightforward of wins for Andreescu in the first round of this competition as the Canadian needed three sets and nearly two and a half hours to clinch her place in the round of 16.

Andreescu warded off a strong local challenge from Sonay Kartal before winning 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 to register only her second victory on grass for the season. She is featuring in her third such tournament, having reached the second round in Rosmalen and getting knocked out in the opener at Berlin.

Things looked to be going Andreescu’s way when she broke her opponent twice in the first set to ease past the Brit. But a sudden turnaround in the second which saw Kartal serve that much better helped no end and a break of serve in the sixth game for her meant she was able to level things out.

The decider proved to be a battle of nerves and grit with Andreescu taking a 2-0 lead but Kartal getting things back to square at 4-4. In the 12th game of the set with Kartal serving to stay in the match, Andreescu forced the deal though.

She earned herself three match-points which she missed but off the fourth, Andreescu converted it to squeeze through to the next round.

Masarova Tames Sasnovich

Masarova had never won a match on grass coming into this season and it was no different when she took to court in Berlin last week. Facing Nadia Podoroska in the first round, she lost in three sets after winning the first.

Here too, as a result, Masarova had come in as a 9/5 underdog against the experience of Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Not much was expected of her but she dished out one of her best recent top-level performances to register her maiden grass win.

In a match that barely lasted an hour, Masarova defeated Sasnovich 6-3, 6-2 to seal her second round spot.

A break in the sixth game of the first set was all that she needed to take the lead and she then went on to break Sasnovich four times in the second set to wrap up the win.

Masarova will need to serve a lot better against Andreescu though given she might not get a lot of chances against her.
