Masarova Makes it Two Shocks in a Row

Masarova had come into the tournament on the back of a first round defeat at the Berlin Open last week. Add the fact she had never won a match at any level on grass, and it wasn’t surprising to  see she was a second favourite going into her opening round encounter against Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

She won 6-3, 6-2 to set up a meeting with Bianca Andreescu who also started off a 3/5 favourite in that match.

In a match lasting a mere an hour and nine minutes, Masarova registered another 6-3, 6-2 victory over the former US Open winner. Masarova did not face a single break-point in the entire match while getting the better of her Canadian opponent three times.

Seven aces punctuated her game and when you dish out a first serve stats of 94% won, then it’s never going to be easy for your opponent.

Can she make it three in a row now?

Navarro Surprises Cornet

Alize Cornet was a 3/4 favourite coming into her second round match and at one point she looked to be living up to those odds as she served for the first set at 5-4 against Navarro.

She was also 5-4 ahead in the second set with one break of serve.

Both times, Navarro broke back at that very point, and then went on to win the set as a surprised Cornet failed to close out the set. In the end, the two hours and 22 minutes encounter ended with Navarro winning 7-5, 7-6 (6) with Cornet also getting a set-point in the second set which she frittered away.

Navarro had come into that match with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Nadia Podoroska in the opener.

She will start off a favourite here but will know there’s not much to choose between her and Masarova.

Masarova v Navarro Prediction and Tip
