Paul Returns to Winning in Eastbourne

Tommy Paul has returned to winning ways after losing early at the Queen’s Club Championship. What can you say about Tommy Paul without mentioning his inconsistencies? A spectacular player capable of a lot when he’s playing well, Paul rarely hits that level because his game is just so hit-and-miss.

He is super aggressive and never changes that approach, living and dying with the result. It either works well as it did in the previous round here in Eastbourne or the way it went against Francisco Cerundolo in Queen’s Club. Grass is a surface on which he can win but he can also lose to anybody.

He’s 4-2 on it this year, 25-14 on the year which proves that he wins more than he losses but his last four losses are to Nicolas Jarry, Brandon Nakashima, Jan-Lennard Struff and Cerundolo. All of them are pretty good players, top 30 players, but none of them are world beaters and all are either similarly ranked as Paul or below.

He won’t make the next step until he starts being consistent and that’s his win condition. If he plays a good match from start to finish he’ll win. If not he can be beaten.

Wolf Figures it Out on Grass

It took J.J. Wolf a bit to figure out how to approach grass tennis. A naturally decent fit, the American needed some time to start winning but now he’s looking very comfortable on it. It’s been a okay year for him so far, with 17 wins and 14 losses with his grass record now looking 3-2.

It was 1-2 before this week as he got the majority of them this week. He’s playing well and serving well. The latter part is crucial for him because much of what he does well is with the serve. If he gets that shorter ball, the forehand will take care of the rest.

If he needs to play longer rallies, then it’s a bit tough. Luckily he won’t need to play long rallies in this but he might want to. Paul has similar struggles to him and while the ceiling is higher with Paul in my humble opinion, I think Wolf has more restraint in his game.

If he strikes the perfect balance between attacking and defending he might just continue his winning streak here.

Paul v Wolf Prediction and Tip

I’m not sure which player wins here but I do think we see a close match. I’d lean towards Paul because he seems to have it this year but Wolf could win as well. The over seems like a good compromise.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21,5 games: 5/6
