Moutet Continues to Cause Controversy

Moutet has done his best to alienate tennis fans recently by his comments about former Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova, whilst his sarcastic response to Emma Radecanu’s admission that she wished she had never won the US Open, will almost certainly ensure he gets a hostile reception when he steps out on the Wimbledon court.

Many are of the opinion that he should shut up and let his tennis do the taking.

It all adds to his image of the bad boy of French tennis though – this, after all, is a man who was kicked out by his own tennis federation last year.

Not that he has much to write home about when it comes to his record in this Championship, never having been beyond the second round before.

Nor had there been much prior to last week to suggest things might be about to change, having lost both of his two previous matches on grass this season.

He did improve on that, though, in Mallorca, reaching the quarter-final before losing to compatriot Adrian Mannarino.

Gasquet Twice a Wimbledon Semi-Finalist

Gasquet has a good Wimbledon record. He has twice been a semi-finalist here, and, on five further occasions, reached the fourth round.

At no other Grand Slam can he claim such a consistent record.

However, he is now 37 years old, heading into the tail end of his career, and it has been seven years since he last reached the fourth round here.

Nor has he particularly distinguished himself on grass this year, although he did reach the quarter-finals in Stuttgart.

However, he was beaten in the first round of Halle, and again last week in Mallorca, where the Australian Jordan Thompson beat him in straight sets.

Moutet v Gasquet Prediction and Tip

Given that Moutet is likely to get a hostile reception, Gasquet will have the crowd on his side, and is the more natural grass court player of the two, so he looks favourite to make the second round.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Gasquet to win: 5/7
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 36.5 games in the match: 5/4
