After making a surprise run to the quarterfinals at the Australian Open this year, Ben Shelton is set to make his debut at Wimbledon.

The 20-year-old, however, has not done much since his Australian Open exploits. He has failed to win consecutive matches in any of his other tournaments this year.

Ranked no. 36th in the world, the left-hander is playing on grass courts for the first time this year. He is 1-2 from his first two tournaments. He won his opener at Queen’s but fell in round 2.

In Mallorca, he was beaten in the first round.

Other than the Australian Open, there was only one tournament where Shelton did well this year and that was in the Cagliari Challenger where he was a semifinalist.

Taro Daniel has found a place in the main draw as a lucky loser.

The Japanese, ranked no. 106th in the world, won his first two qualifying rounds in straight sets against Marco Trungelliti and Luca Nardi respectively. He however, went down fighting in a five-set contest against Belgium’s Kimmer Coppejans in the third qualifying round.

The 30-year-old Daniel will be making his fifth appearance at Wimbledon. He has however made first round exits from all four of his previous appearances.

Daniel is 21-17 across levels this year. His best was a quarterfinal finish in Acapulco and he also reached the third rounds at Indian Wells and Miami.

Shelton has been impressive even in some of the matches that he has lost this year. The world no. 36 will be eager to kick off his maiden Wimbledon campaign with a win. Expect him to edge past the lucky loser.
