Tough Draw for Murray

Andy Murray fell short of a seeding spot at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships. And although he dodged facing any of the elite players in his opening match, he could draw World No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas as early as the second round.

Murray is the only active player to win Wimbledon in the last 10 years outside Novak Djokovic. And he is the only player to have beaten the Serb on Center Court in that span as well.

Prior to the tournament, Murray weighed in on his chances here on what would constitute a success, and although he remains tight-lipped at the prospect of lifting his third Wimbledon, he still remains optimistic about doing well.

The Scot has warmed up nicely for this year’s Championships. His decision not to play the French Open will be vindicated by his run here, but he was in sublime form at the two Challenger titles he played on grass in Surbiton and Nottingham respectively.

Murray won them both and rose to the top 40. A reminder that in his 14 visits to SW19, Murray has never lost a first-round match. Could Ryan Peniston put a stain on that record?

Second Wimbledon Main Draw for Peniston

Ryan Peniston’s strong grass-court showing last summer earned him a Wimbledon main draw wild card. Peniston tallied wins over Scandinavian duo Casper Ruud and Holger Rune in back-to-back tournaments.

Less than a week later, Peniston got a wild card for the Championships where he beat Henri Laaksonen in the first round to earn the first grand slam match win of his career.

Peniston is back at SW19 for the second year in a row in the 136th installment, looking to write up another chapter in his fairytale life.

The 27-year-old, who beat cancer in his toddler years, continues to inspire not just himself but young people passing through a similar fate.

Recent results have not been very good for Peniston, but nothing brings the best out of him than grass court tennis on home turf. This year, his big casualty is former top 25 player Ugo Humbert who he defeated in the first round at Queen’s.

Murray v Peniston Prediction and Tip

Murray has never lost a first-round match at Wimbledon. And Peniston is still an apprentice to his experienced compatriot. After his well-deserved rest following his two title wins, Murray should be raring to go again.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Murray to win: 1/10
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Murray to win in straight sets: 5/6
