Begu’s First Match Since French Open

Irina-Camelia Begu’s form has been intermittently brilliant. Begu is 12-10 for the season, reaching the semifinal in Adelaide – in the opening week of the season, and a quarterfinal in Madrid.

At Grand Slam level, Begu lost in the second round of the Australian Open to Laura Siegmund, while she went one round better at the French Open where she lost to eventual runner-up Karolina Muchova.

The Romanian has been out of action since the straight sets defeat to Muchova, which is now precisely a month ago.

Begu is not particularly fond of the grass. This will be the third year in a row she hasn’t played any warmup tournament prior to Wimbledon.

In each of the last two editions, she made the third round at the Championships, which remains her career-best result at SW19.

She has made the second week of a Major three times in her career, most notably at the Australian Open and twice at the French Open. Begu re-entered the world’s top 30, and will be seeded at No. 29 at this year’s Wimbledon.

Marino On Three-Match Losing Streak

Unlike Begu, Rebecca Marino has played eight matches on grass in the past month, compiling a 3-5 record.

The big-serving Canadian reached her first quarterfinal of the season in Birmingham. She entered the 250 event as a lucky loser and dug out of pair of three-set wins to reach the last eight stage. Marino lost out to Zhu Lin in another three-setter.

In the subsequent tournament in Eastbourne, she also entered the event using the backdoor having lost in qualifying, but this time she lost at the first hurdle to Xiyu Wang who exacted revenge on Marino after her defeat in the previous week.

Marino has usurped Leylah Fernandez as Canada’s No. 2 player, sitting at 83rd spot (12 spots ahead of Leylah) coming to the Championships. And along with Bianca Andreescu, they form a trio of Canadian representatives in the main draw in the women’s section.

This is just her second main draw appearance at Wimbledon in over a decade. Her last and only win came in 2011 and had previously taken a burnout hiatus from the game in the middle of the last decade.

Begu v Marino Prediction and Tip

This match smells of an upset. Begu’s trend of skipping tune-up events could backfire this year. Rebecca Marino has a cannon of serve. If she can stay consistent with her ground game, she has a good chance of doing damage.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Marino to win a set – Yes: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Marino to win: 6/5
