Barrios Vera Wins First Grand Slam Match

Although this is the third time that Barrios Vera has made the main draw of a Grand Slam, and his second at Wimbledon, the Chilean qualifier had never won a match at this level before. That, though, has now changed after he beat fellow South American, Sebastian Baez of Argentina, the world number 46.

The first set was decided on a tie-break after neither man could force a break. Barrios Vera had four set points saved and Baez one, before the Chilean made his fifth count.

It was Baez who forced the first regular break of serve, midway through the second set.

There were more break point opportunities for both men, none were taken, and the match was back level.

In the middle of the third set, a spell of three dropped service games left Barrios Vera a break to the good and he consolidated his lead to take the third set.

The fourth set saw serve dominate to the extent that no break points were forced. But, in the subsequent service break, three dropped serves from Baez ensured he left the championship with a whimper more than a roar.

Wildcard Goffin Beats Lucky Loser

Twice a Wimbledon quarter-finalist and with two further fourth round appearances behind him, this has been the most successful of all Grand Slams in terms of results for the Belgian.

It is a measure of how far his stock has fallen, however, that he was reliant on a wildcard for his place in the main draw this time.

A match against the Lucky Loser, Fabian Marozsan of Hungary, the world number 96, was not the toughest assignment he has ever faced.

And when Goffin took the first set for the loss of just two games, it looked like being an easy day at the office.

Gofffin, though, would have been surprised when Marozsan broke him when he was serving to stay in the second set, and, for a brief moment, the match was level.

It did not take long, though for normal service to be resumed as far as the Belgian was concerned, and he took the third set for the loss of just two games, before whitewashing the fourth.

Barrios Vera v Goffin Prediction and Tip

Just being in the second round is an achievement in itself for Barrios Vera, but Goffin is used to bigger things at this tournament, and will want to justify his wildcard status.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Goffin to win: 5/8
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 38.5 games in the match: 20/23
