Jabeur Passes Andreescu Test

Ons Jabeur returned to the second week of Wimbledon for the third straight year. The Tunisian trailblazer, a finalist here last season, needed all the guile and resilience to defeat a resurgent Bianca Andreescu in three sets.

Jabeur overcame a rain interruption, and the match finished under the roof, coming from a break down in the decider to win 3-6 6-3 6-4 in a match that lasted 12 minutes shy of two hours.

Andreescu was playing on Wimbledon’s hallowed Centre Court for the first time, but did not let nerves or the occasion of playing under a distinguished list of champions and guests in the Royal Box get to her.

Bidding for her first top-10 win in a Major since 2019 US Open, the Canadian started on the front foot, breaking Jabeur in the fourth game of a tight first set. Andreescu held to love at least twice in the opening stanza, clinching the set 6-3.

Jabeur needed to stave off danger at the start of the second set, saving a break point in the opening game.

The Tunisian star began to find her range midway through the second set and broke Andreescu for the first time to take a 4-2 lead. Like Andreescu in the previous set, Jabeur went on to hold to love in her next two service games to force a decider.

The third set was briefly halted to close the roof due to rain, after each player dropped her serve to kick things off. On resumption, it didn’t take long before Jabeur moved a gear, breaking to love in the ninth game and finishing off the match with a hold to 30.

Kvitova Ends Qualifier Stevanovic’s Run

Petra Kvitova ended the stirring run of qualifier Natalija Stevanovic of Serbia, who reached the third round without losing a single set – winning all 28 on offer since Roehampton.

Kvitova won 6-3 7-5, but it was by no means a stroll in the park. Stevanovic’s baseline stubbornness made Kvitova earn every point in a match that was also halted by a rain shower on Court 2.

The experienced Czech rallied from a break deficit in the first set and eventually had three set points on Stevanovic’s serve which were all saved in a long eighth game. But Kvitova shortly served to love for the first set.

In the second set, some supreme serving from Kvitova gave her a seismic lead, moving within two games for a place in the second week.

But Stevanovic didn’t come all the way from qualifying to go down with ease, and instead tried to mix it up with her slices to counter Kvitova’s power. She was rewarded when she broke back at 4-all.

But after a short rain interruption, Kvitova won the final two games of the match and needed at least four match points to close out the win.
