Remarkable Rune Battles Past Davidovich Fokina

In an incredible turnaround, world no. 6 Holger Rune saved two match points and then recovered from 2-6 and 5-8 in the final-set tiebreak to outlast Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and reach the fourth round at Wimbledon.

Showing nerves of steel in a dramatic three hour and 56 minute contest, Rune defeated Davidovich Fokina 6-3, 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8).

Rune, who struck 19 aces and 61 winners in the match, faced two match points as Davidovich Fokina led 4-5 (15-40) on the Dane’s serve in the final set. Rune saved both the match points to stay alive but soon found himself trailing 2-6 in the final set tiebreak. He made a brief recovery by getting a minibreak and winning three points in a row, but the Spaniard won the next two service points to lead 5-8. With defeat staring at him, Rune once again found his A-game as he won five consecutive points to record an incredible win.

Rune, who was a semifinalist in Queen’s improved to 6-1 on grass. He has already featured in three finals this year. While he defended his Munich Open title to claim his fourth ATP title, he lost in the ATP 1000 finals in Monte-Carlo and Rome.

This is Rune’s best showing at Wimbledon after he made a first round exit on debut last year. He also produced his best Australian Open result this year by reaching the fourth round and made it to the French Open quarterfinal for the second time in his second attempt.

Can he make it to the last eight at the grass court major? He did start well with straight set victories over George Loffhagen and Roberto Carballés Baena respectively and then showed his fighting abilities in the third round epic. Expect him to keep the momentum going in the next round.

Dimitrov Trounces Tiafoe

World no. 24 Grigor Dimitrov handed Frances Tiafoe a straight sets rout to storm into the fourth round at Wimbledon for the third time in his career.

The Bulgarian’s best performance at Wimbledon was a semifinal finish in 2014.

The 32-year-old dominated the contest from start to finish to demolish the world no. 10, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2. Dimitrov did not face a single break point in the match, while he converted 5 of 9. He also won 93% points on his first serve and dropped just 12 points of his serve in the entire contest.

The Bulgarian, who struck 33 winners and served 13 aces against Tiafoe, has not dropped a set in the first three rounds.

He defeated Japan’s Sho Shimabukuro 6-1, 6-2, 6-1 in the first round and then knocked out Ilya Ivashka 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in the second round.

A quarterfinalist at Queen’s in the warm-up to Wimbledon, he improved to 7-1 on grass, including qualifying round wins. The season has seen a resurgent Dimitrov as he also made it to his first final in five years, finishing runner-up in Geneva. The eight-time tour level champion was also a semifinalist in Rotterdam and made it to the round of 16 at the French Open.

Can he bring all his experience to play against the young star in the round of 16 and reach a seventh major quarterfinal?

Rune v Dimitrov Prediction and Tip

This is expected to be an intriguing contest between the rising young star in Rune and the experienced pro, who has been playing well this year. While Dimitrov will bank on his experience, Rune’s consistency at the highest level and his fighting abilities displayed in round 3 gives him slight edge over Dimitrov, who has not been tested so far in the tournament.

Rune is expected to edge past the Bulgarian but he may have to do that in more than three sets.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Rune to win: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 40.5 games in the match: 5/6
