Rybakina Thrashes Home Favorite Boulter

Elena Rybakina produced a performance of such dexterity and excellence in her third-round match, ending British interest in the singles draw for another year and taking everyone off their seats to stand and applaud.

Rybakina’s 6-1 6-1 demolition job was completed in 57 sorry minutes. And although the numbers belie the overall picture, Boulter clearly walked in a lioness’ den and had no room to escape.

Boulter was feeling the nerves, shanking returns, spraying loose ground strokes, and even her serve which had defined her recent renaissance malfunctioned at the sheer power and brilliance of the defending champion.

Rybakina dissected Boulter’s serve no fewer than five times in the match. The British No. 1 wasn’t helped by her inability to land more first serves (averaging just 45% in the match).

By contrast, Rybakina, dropped just four points behind her first serve. The Kazakh planted 20 winners against 14 unforced errors, and the nine times she approached the net, she won eight points.

Haddad Maia Eases Past Cirstea

Beatriz Haddad Maia set the trend for one-sided scorelines on Friday. The Brazilian completed her own 6-2 6-2 rout against Romania’s World No. 37 Sorana Cirstea.

Haddad Maia had reached the semifinal of the French Open last month but was extremely lackluster in the grass-court tuneup events.

But with plenty of rest time, she’s got her bit between her teeth again. It took her a while to get going at Wimbledon, needing three sets to overcome Yulia Putintseva and Jaqueline Cristian, but produced something akin to her best tennis in dismantling Cirstea.

The Brazilian lefty was almost unplayable on serve, winning 80% of first-serve points and only broken once in the match. She was aggressive behind the baseline, matching Cirstea’s winners count, and trimming her unforced errors to just 11.

She had greater success behind the return, accounting for over half of the points won with 52%. She converted five of her 12 break points in a one-sided contest.

Rybakina v Haddad Maia Prediction and Tip

Haddad Maia has won two of their meetings in the head-to-head this season, so she might have Rybakina’s number. But you could say both defeats came at an inopportune time for the Kazakh. We saw the best version of Rybakina in the previous round and we expect the defending champion to turn the tables this time.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Rybakina to win: 3/10
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Rybakina to win in three sets: 11/4
