Having made the third round at Wimbledon in what has been her best performance in a Grand Slam, Cocciaretto will enter this tournament ranked 42nd in the world which is just a spot lower than her career-best ranking.

And Cocciaretto will now return to clay, which has been her most preferred surface.

This year itself, she has featured in four clay-court competitions including one at the WTA 125 level and has a 9-3 win-loss record. This includes a title win at the San Luis Potosi Open and a third round appearance at the French Open as well.

Cocciaretto had made the second round of this competition last season with an opening win over Sara Errani but then fallen to Caroline Garcia in a fighting second round encounter. She will hope to go one better this time around.

Sorribes Tormo Solid After Returning in April

Sorribes Tormo had taken a six-month break from tennis late last season and only returned this year in April, having fallen to 132nd in the world.

A combination of solid performances on the ITF circuit and a fourth round appearance at the French Open in which she entered on a protected ranking has helped Sorribes Tormo break into the top 100.

She now stands at 85th in the world and some more of such bright performances could help her march ahead, especially given how few points she’s been defending in the second half of the season.

Speaking of defending points, it must be quickly added here that Sorribes Tormo had made the semifinal of this very event last year. That would mean she has a few of those points to lose if she goes down early in this tournament, something that looks likely given her opponent’s form and ranking.

Interestingly enough Sorribes Tormo starts off a 4/5 favourite here.

Cocciaretto v Sorribes Tormo Prediction and Tip

While Sorribes Tormo is a bookmakers’ favourite, we will have to go with the contrarian bet of a Cocciaretto win given her form on clay. A keen tussle can be expected.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Cocciaretto to win: 1/1
