Mackenzie McDonald was facing a tricky player in Tu Li in the opening round and he passed the test with a solid 6-4 7-6(5) victory. The American has had an odd season so far with some great and some rather poor performances. For example, he lost to Diego Schwartzman at the Queen’s Club championships which is an awful loss.
Then he made the semi-final of Eastbourne beating his compatriot Fritz on the surface so it’s basically a lot of up-and-down play. You never know what you’re going to get from the American though he is a fine player capable of some amazing performances.
Playing a youngster should certainly will him an experience edge but sometimes that can backfire. The young players are bold in their approach so they can often surprise veterans.
The year overall has been solid at 22-19 with the grass score 8-5. He’s generally been pretty fair on the surface and likes to play on home soil.

Alex Michelsen is a very young player, a college player basically but he’s also proving to belong on the Tour. A couple of wins here over veterans like Maxime Cressy 6-7(5) 6-4 7-5 and James Duckworth 4-6 6-3 6-0 prove that he belongs. He is 40-14 on the year and 6-3 on grass as well so the lack of experience is not bothering him so far.
He already won two solid matches at the event and will eye a maiden ATP Tour semi-final appearance if he beats McDonald. Don’t expect him to be afraid of the moment or anything like that as he has the game to take out his fellow American.
If he catches McDonald on his bad day he’ll beat him certainly and that’s the thing. It’s very hard to predict what kind of level we will get from either player. Michelsen is an aggressive player and plays very similarly to most Americans so he’s a natural fit on faster surfaces.
A good day for him and he’ll win.

McDonald is the likely winner but I have a feeling that Michelsen can do some damage. The over seems like a solid pick.
