World no. 26 Qinwen Zheng defeated third seed Mayar Sherif in a three-set contest on Saturday to reach her second WTA final.
The Chinese player, who had finished runner-up in the Pan Pacific Open last year, needed over three hours to beat the Egyptian 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in the semifinal. Zheng struck nine aces in the match, saved 8 of 14 break points and converted 8 of 16 to knock out the world no. 38.
With the win, Zheng improved to 10-4 on clay this season and 19-13 on the tour.
Zheng’s campaign in Palermo began with a double bagel against Sara Errani and then she needed three sets to dispatch France’s Diane Parry in round 2.
The second seed then trounced Emma Navarro in straight sets in the quarterfinals before knocking out the Egyptian to find a place in the final.

Jasmine Paolini reached a third career final with a straight sets win over Sara Sorribes Tomro on Saturday.
The Italian, ranked no. 52nd in the world, came back from a break down twice to take the first set in the tiebreak and then raced to victory in the second by bageling the Spaniard and completing a 7-6 (8-6), 6-0 victory.
This was Paolini’s first straight sets win this week. She had started her campaign with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 win over Arantxa Rus and then rallied from a set down to beat Dayana Yastremska 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 16.
Her biggest win came over the top seed and world no. 11 Daria Kasatkina in the quarterfinal, whom she defeated 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
Paolini, who was a semifinalist last year, will be playing in her third WTA final. The 27-year-old had won the title at the Slovenia Open in 2021 but finished runner-up at the Transylvania Open last year.
This year, Paolini has been impressive at the Challenger level, winning the title in Florence (her second WTA 125 title) and finishing runner-up in Makarska.

Paolini has played a lot more on clay than Zheng and has even found more success in lower level tournaments this year. Additionally home conditions and crowd support will be advantageous to her in the final. However, she will be up against a player who has been much more consistent at the highest level this year. It will be an interesting contest with Zheng edging out the Italian for her maiden title.
