Isner Shows Signs of a Turnaround

Having made the final of the Dallas Open earlier this year, Isner then went on to lose eight matches in a row before featuring in the Newport Open last week.

It was finally in Newport that Isner showed signs of some of the sparkle from his glorious past that had seen him become – and stay as – a top-10 player in the past years.

The currently 103rd-ranked player made it past Alex Bot in three sets in his opener there before routing Corentin Moutet in the second. In the quarterfinals that followed, Isner needed a final set tie-breaker to overturn Tommy Paul and win the match despite starting out at 17/10 odds to overcome his opponent.

It was finally in the semifinal that Isner was shown the door by Adrian Mannarino, the eventual Newport champion but not before he had put up a fight there.

While Isner’s service, which has been his biggest weapon, hasn’t remained as potent as earlier, he sure doesn’t look like he is done yet. And against a player who is more of a clay-court guy, he will have a good chance to exploitthat.

Koepfer Yet to Win a Match on Hardcourt This Season

Whether indoors or outdoors, ATP top-level tournaments or Challengers, Koepfer hasn’t won a match in a hardcourt competition this season.

The world number 88 last featured at Wimbledon where he was sent packing by a struggling and out-of-form Oscar Otte in straight sets. And rather strangely, Koepfer has opted not to feature in any of the clay court competitions being played elsewhere in the world and flown to the USA make it to the Atlanta Open on hardcorts.

This is after Koepfer’s only participation on this surface came in February and March when he played in three hardcourt Challenger tournaments and lost all three matches he played in.

Since then, he has turned things around from having fallen to 262nd in the world to his current 88th thanks to his two Challenger wins on clay and another such final he participated in as well.

Can he now show he is ready for hardcourt tennis?

Isner v Koepfer Prediction and Tip

Isner has shown he isn’t done yet and with his opponent having not had too much success on this surface we will have to go with the American to win this. Probably even in straight sets.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Isner to win: 3/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Isner to win in straight sets: 6/4
