Shelton Returns after Wimbledon Exit

He lasted just two rounds at Wimbledon but for a player who is having his first real top-level season of winning main draw matches at the highest level, Shelton continues to remain ranked in and around the top 40 of the ATP Rankings.

And Shelton now returns to the surface on which his ascent began.

It was at the Australian Open earlier this year where Shelton showed his talented self as he reached the quarterfinal before falling to Tommy Paul. Having begun the season ranked 96th, he would break into the top 50 as a result of that and slowly but steadily edge past the top 40 as well despite having no big results come his way.

Just the qualification for the main draw of ATP tournaments gave him enough points to make it to 35th in the world.

In more recent times, Shelton has won just two of his past eight matches on the ATP circuit and that might be a cause for a bit of a concern. Playing at home now, however, and on a surface of his choice, could allow Shelton a bit more a chance to gallop to a few wins.

Juncheng Makes it Through the Qualifiers

In what has been his first appearance at this tournament, Juncheng overcame Yasutaka Uchiyama and Arthur Cazaux in the qualifiers to make it to the main draw.

In doing so, Juncheng will be playing in the main draw of his seventh career ATP tournament. Juncheng has won just one main draw match before this and lost six of the matches.

The Chinese, 18-year-old’s only win so far came at the Australian Open earlier this year, when, as a qualifier he stunned Oscar Otte in the first round. He would go on to fall to Frances Tiafoe in the second.

He would later qualify for the French Open as well but lose in the first round while making the Chicago Challenger semifinal more recently before the eventual winner Alex Michelsen got the better of him.

Can he put up a fight against the struggling Shelton?

Shelton v Juncheng Prediction and Tip

Shelton is a favourite here but not a sure-shot winner given his recent track record. We could be looking at a fighting three-setter here instead.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/5
