Lehecka at Career-Best after Wimbledon Exploits

The good news is Lehecka is back in action after having retired from his Wimbledon 2023 match against Daniil Medvedev. And he is back playing on clay, one of his least favourite surfaces and has just made the second round after getting an opening round bye.

This follows a season in which he has had mixed results on clay but on the other surfaces Lehecka has a win-loss record of 19-13. That has been enough to propel him to 33rd in the world, his career-best ranking.

The big question now off Lehecka is what can he do on clay. In the five top level tournaments that he played on this surface, he has won and lost five matches apiece but this includes opening defeats at the Madrid Masters and Rome Masters and a second round loss at the hands of Marcos Giron at the French Open.

Playing for the first time in Umag, Lehecka also starts off his campaign here against a tricky opening opponent who might not be in the best of forms but has done well on clay in general. Can he work something out here?

Thiem Goes Past Bagnis

Facundo Bagnis is a solid clay-court player but has fallen outside the top 130 on the ATP Rankings. What that meant was that going into his opening round, it was Thiem who was the favourite and surely enough the former French Open finalist lived up to those 11/20 odds.

Thiem needed two hours and four minutes in the end but he made it past his Argentine opponent 6-4, 7-5 to seal a second round spot for the second clay court competition in a row.

Last week he had done something similar in Gstaad, defeating Alexandre Muller in straight sets before losing to Hamad Medjedovic in the second.

What Thiem will hope for is continue serving the way he did against Bagnis. He had a first serve win percentage of 84% and saved all of the six break-points he faced. The challenge does rise against the world number 33 but his opponent also isn’t too fond of clay.

Lehecka v Thiem Prediction and Tip

Lehecka starts off a 13/20 favourite here but we think this could go a long way before a winner is decider.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 5/6
