Kovalik Ousts Wild
Slovakia’s Jozef Kovalik had made it to the main draw as a lucky loser but he looked good in his opening round match against Thiago Seyboth Wild, beating the Brazilian in straight sets.
The world no. 172 saved 2 of 3 break points and converted half of four to win the one hour and 54 minute match 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.
In the qualifying round, Kovalik had beaten Pavel Kotov in three sets, but he had lost to Elias Ymer 3-6, 3-6 in the second qualifying round.
A semifinalist in Hamburg in 2018, Kovalik had made it to the round of 16 last year. He is back in the second round this year. Can he reach his first tour level quarterfinal of the season on Wednesday?
