Hunter Shocks Vekic

In a shocking result, the top seeded Donna Vekic was sent packing by Hunter in the very first round allowing the Aussie only her second win in main draws of competitions this year.

Hunter was on court for nearly two hours and had to come back from behind to seal off her victory over the world number 22.

Four breaks of serves in the first set levelled things off before Vekic stormed ahead with her third break and soon held on to win the opening set. That was the last time she would get the better of Hunter’s serve though.

Hunter would go on to save three break-points in the second set and break Vekic three more times over the next two sets to ensure the shock result.

The only other time Hunter had won a match at the highest level this year came at the French Open where she overcame Nuria Parrizas-Diaz. She had lost to Elina Svitolina in the second.

This time around she has a better chance of making it successive wins.

Akugue Overcomes Pigossi

She is just 19 but Akugue is slowly but surely climbing up the rankings ladder. Having featured in only the lower level of tournaments before this, her opening round match against Laura Pigossi was her first ever on the WTA circuit having only played doubles tennis at this level before.

And Akugue did a good job in getting past Pigossi, defeating her opponent in straight sets.

In a match that lasted an hour and 53 minutes, Akugue won 7-5, 6-4 to enter the second round and in all probabilities break back into the top 200 of the rankings.

Akugue was herself broken thrice in the encounter including once in the very first game that allowed Pigossi to serve for the set at 5-3. She came back with successive breaks to clinch the first set and then had a chance to serve out the match at 5-3.

While Akugue failed to do that, she managed to get there by breaking her opponent for the fifth time in the encounter.

Can she double her career win count here?

Hunter v Akugue Prediction and Tip
