Carballes Baena Returns After Gstaad Retirement

Roberto Carballes Baena will return to the ATP Tour, a week after he retired in his match against Stan Wawrinka in Gstaad.

He trailed 1-6, 1-3, when he called it quits for what is reported to be a neck injury. It’s not often Carballes Baena throws in the towel, more so on his beloved clay.

But the problem might have caused him unwavering pain, and possibly because he did not want to enhance its severity, jeopardizing the second half of the campaign.

The Spaniard has played some solid clay court tennis in the first half of the season most notably in Marrakech, Morocco, where he hoisted his second ATP title of his career.

Following that success, he broke the world’s top 50 for the first time, but his place there was short-lived, mostly losing in the first or second round in tournaments. So let’s see if he’ll be able to hit the ground running after his recovery.

Daniel Fights Back To Beat Landaluce

Taro Daniel came back from the brink to beat Spanish wild card Martin Landaluce 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 to advance into the second round of the Umag Open.

Landaluce, a former junior no. 1, is a massive talent, having already won a Grand Slam title at that level at last summer’s US Open. And he showcased his burgeoning talent in Umag, breaking the veteran Daniel three times in the first set.

The 17-year-old has three break points to take a 3-1 lead in the second set, but faltered in the fourth game as Daniel held. Late in the second set, Daniel applied some pressure for the first time in the match and got his break for a 6-5 lead, and he went on to serve for the set to 15.

Landaluce made an awful start to the decider, dropping the first two of his service games to fall 4-0 down. Although the set was tightly contested as opposed to the scoreline, Daniel kept the youngster at bay.
