Fils Topples Galan In Straight Sets

Arthur Fils’ fledging career is taking him places. Even though he had an underwhelming grass-court swing in the past month, he will be looking forward to the second half of the season where he could rack up some valuable points on hard courts.

But before his trip to North America, Fils has geared up for the clay, where he is making a stop at Hamburg for the first time.

On Tuesday, he won on his tournament debut, beating Colombian lucky loser Daniel Elahi Galan 7-5, 7-5 for his first main draw win since winning his maiden ATP title in Lyon in May.

That victory was long overdue with Fils winning 77% first-serve points and saving four of five break points he faced in the match.

The young Frenchman broke Galan towards the end of both set 1 and 2 to clinch victory in just under two hours of play.

Lajovic Ends Dismal Run

Dusan Lajovic wasn’t the only one struggling to win main draw matches in recent months. The Serbian World No. 60 last tasted victory at the Madrid Masters when he upset Canada’s Felix Auger Aliassime.

Since then, Lajovic lost six matches in a row – his worst losing sequence for some time, but he managed to break free by beating fellow Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 for the second time this season.

The last time he defeated Kecmanovic was also in three sets in Banja Luka and he went on to win the tournament. Could it be a case of deja vu in Hamburg?

Only time will tell, but he showed some wonderful mental fortitude to prevent Kecmanovic from running away with it. Having dropped the first set 6-3, Lajovic saved break points to lead 4-3, and then 5-4, before transmitting pressure to his countryman who couldn’t hold in the 10th game of the second set.

The decider stayed on serve until late on when Lajovic pounced to earn the lone break. It took him three match points to close it out but he got the monkey off his back at last.

Fils v Lajovic Prediction and Tip

Both players ended their worst losing sequence this year in main draw matches by virtue of winning the first round. This one is tough to call from a result standpoint, but we think the games spread could be a good investment.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 8/11
