Hanfmann Advances As Cerundolo Retires

Yannick Hanfmann had one of the toughest draws at this year’s Hamburg Open taking on fifth seed and Argentina’s No. 1 Francisco Cerundolo in his opening match.

Playing in Hamburg for the first time since 2020, Hanfmann managed to pick up just his second main draw win at his home tournament.

Hanfmann was wasteful in the first set, missing so many golden opportunities to win the set, spurning three break points, and losing the set 6-4.

But the physical toil weighed heavily on Cerundolo who had played a ton of matches in recent weeks. This couldn’t have been more evident that in the second set where Hanfmann raced to a 4-0 with the insurance of a double break.

After wrapping up the second set in 29 minutes, he secured an early break in the decider. And after Cerundolo wasted a chance to break back in the sixth game, he threw in the towel, handing Hanfmann passage into the second round.

Zhang Picks Up Another Win On Clay

Zhizhen Zhang is having quite the season on clay this year. He improved his overall record in 2023 on the dirt to 12-8 after beating British qualifier Jan Choinski 6-4, 7-5 in just under two hours at the Hamburg Open.

Even though Zhang landed just 56% of first serves in the match, he accounted for a high tally of points won behind both his first and second serve deliveries.

Zhang broke Choinski for the first time in the fifth game of the first set in one of the longest games in the match. He would consolidate successfully in each of his next service games before winning the set.

In the second set, the Chinese broke Choinski in almost a mirror-like game of the first set, with plenty of deuce games before managing to break through. Choinski, however, managed to break back straight away.

But once the set went into the latter stages, Zhang upped his game and got another crucial break in the 11th game. He served for the match to 15.

Hanfmann v Zhang Prediction and Tip

No doubt Zhang has made drastic improvements on clay this season, but Hanfmann is more comfortable playing in it, especially with the extra incentive of performing in front of his home fans.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Hanfmann to win: 4/11
