For the second match in a row in this competition, the top-seeded Ruud did not have it easy. After having been taken to three sets in his first round win by Sebastian Baez, Ruud met a similar fate at the hands of Cristian Garin.
The good news, in the end, was that Ruud was able to come back from a horror show of a first set to win in three.
Ruud grabbed the victory 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 in an hour and 41 minutes to advance to the quarterfinal of a clay court competition for the fifth time in a row.
Such was the start that Garin made, Ruud lost his serve three times in the opening set. Ruud earned himself a break in the second set but then faced four break-points in the sixth game before saving them all and clinching the equaliser.
With the confidence back, Ruud then went 4-0 up in the decider before Garin could even make a dent with his own serve. By that time it was too late as Ruud came through with ease.

Fils Makes it Four 7-5s in a Row
He had beaten Daniel Elahi Galan 7-5, 7-5 in the first round. In the second, Fils registered the same scoreline against Dusan Lajovic to make it to the quarterfinal and set up this meeting with Ruud.
What needs to be noted is Fils has had a good time on clay, having won his maiden title on this surface earlier this year. That had come in Lyon.
And that’s what has been the issue for his fourth-ranked opponent in this tournament – he has been struggling against players who know their way around court.
Sure, Fils isn’t as experienced as Baez or Garin but he sure can play on clay as has been the case this season, including in this tournament where he is yet to drop a set.
His younger legs and shorter time on court so far might also help him but he would know that Ruud is no Galan or Lajovic.
