Zverev Eases Past Marterer

Zverev had dropped just three games in his opening round match against Alex Molcan and while fellow German Maximilian Marterer put up a braver front, he was still beaten in straight sets.

In a second round match lasting an hour and 18 minutes, Zverev faced no challenge in the first set and was leading 4-1 in the second at one stage.

But just when it seemed like it was all one-way traffic in favour of Zverev, Marterer took advantage of a loose service game and broke his German counterpart in the seventh game. He levelled things out in the next to give himself a chance too.

Zverev’s experience and pedigree stood out though as he put ample pressure on his opponent’s serve in the 12th game to break him to love, winning 6-3, 7-5 and moving to the last eight.

Van Assche Stuns Fokina

Neither the odds and nor the manner in which the match started suggested that Van Assche had any chance in his second round match against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Because as a 2/5 favourite to win it, Fokina looked to have grabbed the early advantage when he broke Van Assche and then served it out in the ninth game to grab the first set.

Van Assche fought back to go a break up in the second, only to lose his serve yet again in the seventh game. He staved off a break-point in the ninth and the 11th game, both of which could have given Fokina a chance to serve out the match but the set was pushed into the tie-breaker.

It was Van Assche who ran away with it to level things out before he went a break up early in the decider. That proved to be a deciding one as a now-confident Van Assche needed to avoid just one break-point in the set from there on before clinching the encounter.

Can he put up some sort of a showing against Zverev though?

Zverev v Van Assche Prediction and Tip
