Swiatek Blows Liu Away

After a straight-set win over Nigina Abduraimova in the first round, Swiatek eased to another straightforward win over Claire Liu in the second round of her home competition.

Swiatek, who was a whopping 1/33 coming into that match against Claire Liu, dropped just four games in the encounter before moving into the quarterfinal. In a match that ended up lasting an hour and 38 minutes because of the number of break-points that Swiatek missed, the world number one won 6-2, 6-2.

A couple of early breaks in the first set is all that Swiatek needed to clinch the lead and very soon she was 4-0 up in the second set as well. Liu pulled one back off the 13th break-points she had but was broken yet again to allow Swiatek to cruise through.

This win means Swiatek has emulated her previous-best showing in this tournament after having made the quarterfinal last season too. She had lost to the in-form Caroline Garcia there.

She will be a favourite to go a step further this season.

Noskova Has No Trouble against Hruncakova

After having come back from a set down to scrape through to a first round win, Noskova trounced Viktoria Hruncakova in her second round match. In doing so she reached the fourth WTA quarterfinal of the season after having started the year with an appearance in the final of the Adelaide International.

Noskova was on court for a mere hour and eight minutes in registering a 6-3, 6-3 win over her 122nd-ranked opponent, breaking her four times in the encounter.

Just one of those breaks came in the first set before she race away to a 5-1 lead in the second. Soon enough she had a chance to win it 6-2 but frittered away a match-point before breaking her opponent a third time and clinching the result.

A win against Swiatek looks to be a bridge too far for Noskova though.
