Akugue’s Dream Run Continues

Native player Noha Akugue is playing some inspired tennis at the Hamburg event after showing some promise in previous years. She’s been a regular wild card for many years now and most of the time she produces rather solid efforts.

Clay is by far her best surface which makes this run not so surprising but the list of players she beat is rather solid. Laura Pigossi in the first round 7-5 6-4, Storm Hunter in the second round 0-6 7-6(2) 6-4 and finally Roland Garros semi-finalist Martina Trevisan in the quarter-final 5-7 6-4 7-5.

She plays aggressive and attacking tennis which allowed her to come back twice. The more she plays the more confident she is and it’s reflected in the scores as she turned around two matches after losing the opening set.

We could be seeing more of that in this match as she probably feels unbeatable now after this impressive run.

Shnaider Surprising Everyone With Her Results

Diana Shnaider is surprising everyone with her run in Hamburg because it came out of nowhere. The Russian showed a lot of promise earlier in the year but then disappeared for a few months without any impressive showings.

Now she’s putting together some good results in Hamburg winning three solid matches. The first round saw her beat Polina Kudermetova 6-0 4-6 6-1. The second round saw her defeat Julia Grabher 6-4 6-2 while the quarter-final saw her down Bernard Pera 6-1 2-6 6-4.

She’s capable of producing such a level but considering that she didn’t for a long time, people are surprised that it came in Hamburg. She’s quite aggressive and moves well on clay which is her main asset.

She will need to take the match from Akugue because both can hit the ball well so the baseline play will decide. Who plays better will win.

Akugue v Shnaider Prediction and Tip

Both players have impressed with their level and it’s hard to predict which will win. I could see either so I’ll back the over as we could see three sets.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
