Wawrinka Rolls Back the Years

Now 38, Wawrinka returned to the top 100 for the first time since his prolonged injury problems earlier this year, and, so far in Umag, he has provided reminders of the player that was once a multiple Grand Slam winner.

In the first round, he beat Filip Misolic of Austria, who had come through the qualifying competition, defeating him in straight sets and barely troubled on serve, apart from one first set minor wobble.

His next opponent, Federico Coria of Argentina, is a clay court specialist, and it was the world number 108 who seemed likely to take the first set to a tie-break after saving three set points.

However, Wawrinka raised his game and broke again to claim the first set,

The second set proved to be something of an anti-climax as Coria weakened, He would only win one further game, as Wawrinka rolled back the years by reaching the quarter-final.

Carballes-Baena Ends Losing Run

Carballes-Baena won the second senior title of his career in Marrakech in April, and now he has his sights set on a third in Croatia,

The Spaniard had lost his last three match across different tournaments, but, after being given a first round bye, put an end to that run by beating Taro Daniel of Japan, the world number 113.

The Spaniard began badly, and was broken in the opening game of the match. But he responded with two consecutive breaks of his own, and in the end took the first set easily.

And, after the first two games of the second set were shared, Carballes-Baena took complete control of the match.

Daniel failed to win another game, and long before the end, the Spaniard’s thoughts had already turned to who he would face next.

Wawrinka v Carballes Baena Prediction and Tip

Although Wawrinka won their last match, it was by default and he can expect no such favours this time.

Age favours the Spaniard, but it would be a great story for the organisers to have Wawrinka in the semi-finals.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Carballes-Baena to win: 7/9
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 5/6
