World no. 42 Elisabetta Cocciaretto moved into the semifinals of the Lausanne Open with a straight sets win over world no. 68 Elina Avanesyan on Friday. Cocciaretto may have needed just two sets to win the match but it wasn’t an easy one for her and it needed an incredible fightback from the Italian in the opening set.

Avanesyan was off to a flying start as she won the first five games, but quite incredibly she could not close out the set and Cocciaretto won the next seven games in a row to win the opening set.

The second set started with four consecutive breaks of serve but Cocciaretto finished strongly by winning the last four games in a row to complete a 7-5, 6-3 victory,

Cocciaretto had begun her campaign with a comeback win over Celine Naef in the first round and had also needed three sets to dispatch Argentina’s Julia Riera in the second round.

She reached her maiden WTA final earlier this year, finishing runner-up in Hobart. Can she reach her second on Saturday? She also featured in a Challenger final this year, winning the San Luis Open in Mexico.

Bondar Breezes Past Zidansek

World no. 155 Anna Bondar stormed into the semifinals with a thumping straight sets win over 2021 champion Tamara Zidansek on Friday.

The Hungarian saved all three of the break points that she faced in the match and converted 5 of 9 break points to win the one hour and 22 minutes contest 6-2, 6-0.

Bondar, who is also in the doubles semifinal with partner Diane Parry, has not dropped a set en route the singles semis. She began her campaign with a 6-1, 6-3 drubbing of Aliona Bolsova and then she knocked out sixth seed Mirra Andreeva 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.

Bondar had not reached a quarterfinal at any level this year, but now she is in the semifinal and on the verge of making it to her first ever tour level final.
