Lorenzo Sonego reached a first ATP semifinal in 2023 with a come-from-behind win over Jaume Munar in the quarterfinal on Friday.

The world no. 43 Sonego saved 7 o 9 break points and converted 5 of 6 to beat the world no. 104, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in over two hours.

The Italian, who had a first round bye, had beaten compatriot Marco Cecchinato 6-1, 7-6 (9-7) in the second round on Thursday.

A three-time champion at the tour level, Sonego will be looking to reach his sixth ATPP final on Saturday. He has been in decent form this year, reaching two hard court quarterfinals in Montpellier and Dubai and reaching the  round of 16 in Miami and the French Open.

Wawrinka Dumps Out Carballes Baena

Stan Wawrinka edged out Spain’s Robero Carballes Baena in straight sets on Friday to reach his first semifinal of the year.

The Swiss was broken in the very first game of the match but he clawed his way back into the match with two breaks of serves that got him the opening set. The second set was an interesting one with neither allowing the other to break. But eventually, it was Wawrinka who broke the world no. 59 in the final game to register a 6-4, 7-5 victory.

The 38-year-old world no. 72, who is playing in Umag for the first time since 2007, had won the Umag title 17 years ago. He is on the brink of another final.

Wawrinka has not lost a set this week. He defeated Filip Misolic 6-3, 6-2 in the opening round and Federico Coria 7-5, 6-1 in the second round.

A three-time grand slam champion, the former no. 3 will be hoping to reach a first final sinceAntwerp in 2019. Can the 16-time tour level champion reach a 31st final of his career?
