Arnaldi Rallies Past Top Seed

Mateo Arnaldi rebounded after dropping the first set to knock out top seed Jiri Lehecka on Friday and reach his maiden ATP Tour semifinal.

The world no. 76 Arnaldi served 8 aces, saved 2 of 4 break points and capitalised on 3 of 9 breaking opportunities to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 in two hours and six minutes.

The win over the world no. 33 was the 22-year-old’s third top 50 win this year. Arnaldi had also beaten Casper Ruud and Emil Ruusuvuori.

Arnaldi had started his Umag campaign with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over the Netherlands’ Jesper De Jong and he then ousted compatriot Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) in the round of 16.

He has played three Challenger finals this year, two on clay, and won all three of them. Can he reach his maiden final with another top class display on Saturday?

Popyrin Holds Off Prižmić

World no. 90 Alexei Popyrin stopped local hope Dino Prižmić in the quarterfinal on Friday to keep his hopes of a second ATP title alive.

Popyrin, who had won his only ATP title in Singapore two years ago, missed out on an opportunity to close out the first set at 5-3, but he still managed to take the opening set after dominating the tiebreak.

The second set also saw Popyrin break first, Prižmić responded with an immediate break and then Popyrin missed out on a match point chance on Prižmić’s serve. He made amends later in the set and got a second break to win the two hour and 26 minute match 7-6 (7-2), 7-5.

The Australian, who reached the round of 16 in Rome this season, will be playing in his first semifinal of the season. He has not dropped a set this week, having begun with straight set wins over Benjamin Bonzu=i and third seed Sebastian Ofner in the first two round respectively.

Arnaldi v Popyrin Prediction and Tip

This is expected to be a close contest and could go the distance. However, given how Arnaldi has grown as a player throughout the season there are good chances of him reaching a maiden ATP final.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 5/6
