Kokkinakis Searches for Form

Thanasi Kokkinakis is still searching for his best tennis and he’s hopeful that things could work out for him in North America. He took part in the Granby challenger and won the first round but retired in the second match. In Atlanta, he took down a pretty solid Gael Monfils 1-6 6-3 7-6(5) but lost to Alex de Minaur 6-3 6-4.

It’s been a lot of that recently for Kokkinakis who is still searching for his best tennis. The conditions suit his style in North America so we’ll see if he can put together some strong performances. The year overall has been pretty solid with 27 wins and 17 losses.

Hard courts are his best surface because of his serve and the forehand. The forehand is both a weapon and can be a problem if he sprays it too hard. It tends to happen but for the most part, he’s been really good on hard with a 19-10 record.

It’s his first time in Washington though so that might be an interesting experience. Very hot and humid but he’s an Aussie so the heat should not be a major problem.

Daniel Eyeing Upset

Daniel Taro might have played most of his tennis on clay but the Japanese player is a really good hard court player, especially in the recent 2-3 years. He went 5-7 on the surface in 2021 but improved to 27-17 last year and 13-8 this year.

Some of those impressive showings on hard courts saw him reach the quarter-final in Acapulco, a 3rd round at Indian Wells earlier this year and a 3rd round at the Miami Masters. That’s no joke and he’ll certainly eye his chances against Kokkinakis.

He’s beaten him before, he can stay with him in rallies hitting-wise and he can certainly frustrate him enough with his quickness around the court to bait many errors. It’s a good matchup for him and he’ll certainly look to exploit that.

His recent form hasn’t been that great and he’s coming from clay so there is going to be some adjusting to do. I still think he can put up a good fight.

Kokkinakis v Daniel Prediction and Tip

While Kokkinakis is the far likelier winner, I haven’t been impressed with his play recently. I think Daniel will push him so I recommend the over.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
