Kenin Back in the Top 100

Sofia Kenin’s resurgence has earned her a wild card at this week’s Citi Open in Washington, and which couldn’t have come at a better time as she embarks on rising through the WTA rankings again.

Kenin returned to the world’s Top 100 for the first time in 16 months after a scintillating run to the third round of Wimbledon as a qualifier.

Kenin pulled off one of the biggest shocks of the first round when she eliminated compatriot and top-10 player Coco Gauff in three sets.

Even in the midst of another tough season, Kenin has managed two top-10 wins this year, having also recorded a scalp in Rome when she toppled Aryna Sabalenka.

After dealing with debilitating injuries down the years, Kenin is healthy and firing and the timing of this good form means she’ll a perennial danger during the US Open summer series.

Frech Snaps Losing Streak

Magdalena Frech snapped her three-match losing streak by scaling the qualifying rounds at the weekend and advancing into the main draw in Washington.

Frech had lost to the likes of Jelena Ostapenko and Ons Jabeur on grass, which is hardly her fault, and finally received a huge slice of good luck when her first-round opponent Kayla Day retired after one set in their qualifying match.

Day had been in terrific form after bagging the W100 ITF in Canada and broke the top 100 for the first time as a result. But it looked like the week took a lot of her physically, and coupled with the heat in Washington, she just had to throw in the towel.

That set up a straight shootout for the main draw against another American Clervie Ngounoue.

Ngounoue ranked outside the Top 500, played better than her current ranking, and despite the huge disparity in rankings, she established a 4-1 lead with an early break.

But the Pole used her greater weight of shot and experience of playing Tour-level tennis count, reeling five straight games. She forced a tiebreak which she won comfortably.

Frech took her time before getting the job done, breaking the 17-year-old teenager late in the second set.

Kenin v Frech Prediction and Tip

Frech can count herself lucky the qualifying draw played out perfectly for her, playing a fatigued opponent first, and then an inexperienced teenager. But we expect Kenin to make good use of her recent momentum.
