Pera Drops Out Of Top 50

Bernarda Pera has lost her place in the world’s Top 50 after a disappointing showing in two clay-court tournaments she won last summer.

Pera’s title defenses in both Budapest and Hamburg came to a screeching halt against the same opponent, Diana Shanider, a 19-year-old Russian who outpowered her with her slider serve and bullet-like forehand.

Shanider was Pera’s kryptonite, emerging in both of their closely-contested meetings as the winner. That came at a cost for Pera who despite reaching the fourth round of Roland Garros in June, has had a subdued stay on grass and the brief stop on clay post-Wimbledon.

Pera will be hoping the hard courts in North America will salvage whatever is left of a modest year. Pera is only 17-17 for the season and is defending substantial ranking points in August.

So unless there is a massive reaction and an upturn in form, she could drop further down the rankings.

Fernandez Routs Boulter to Qualify

Leylah Fernandez is set to mark her main draw debut in Washington after a superb qualifying run at the weekend, beating two higher-ranked opponents.

World No. 88 Fernandez scored wins over Varvara Gracheva and British No. 1 Katie Boulter, doing so without the loss of a set.

Against Boulter, the Canadian lefty dropped just five games, winning 6-4, 6-1 in just an hour and 29 minutes. Fernandez utilized her court craft and silky hand skills to outsmart the hard-hitting Boulter.

It was also a poor serving performance by the Briton who won 51% of her first serve points. Fernandez created a whopping 11 break points as a result and converted five of them.

The 20-year-old also had a healthy ratio of return points won with 54%. By contrast, Boulter won just 39% in that regard.

Pera v Fernandez Prediction and Tip

It’s the battle of the lefties, and last time out, it didn’t go too well for Bernarda Pera who lost to 19-year-old Diana Shnaider. Fernandez has already had two matches under her belt in the Washington heat and do not be fooled by her current ranking. She’s got a higher floor than 88.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Fernandez to win: 8/15
